Real Life Dilbert

The thing about working for a big company is that very often, “the brainstorm effect” takes over. This is where given a fairly random bunch of ideas, picking the least worst option is seen as a terriffic achievement. I only hope that for the sake of the major financial services company I work for, the email below represents such a brainstorm effect and that the quality of applications was particularly below par…

Now the best bit. This “interesting” suggestion won a choice of prize worth up to £700!!!

“Congratulations to R E from Scheme who has won the first Imagine award of 2006.

R’s idea was to help tackle absence levels by introducing anti bacterial soap and alcohol gel at coffee machines. She demonstrated that the small costs of introducing this, if offset against the volume of absences due to sickness & diarrhoea etc, would more than repay itself even if there was only a very small reduction in absence. Plus people themselves would be healthier!

The idea is now being looked at in more detail.

Well done R. “

Apple Macbook

.
My, those new Apple “budget” laptops, the macbooks, look good! I was actually a bit surprised at how good the spec of the machines is. Although there’s some debate over the value of a glossy screen, personally speaking I’d take the higher contrast it gives and live with the potential glare issues. (Truth be told, I’m just incredibly vain and like to admire my reflection at every opportunity :-) But I can’t for the life of me work out why it’s so much more expensive to get the things in black. One thing about Apple, they know how to separate the fashion conscious from their cash! But they’ve also got the odd quid out of me too so I shall mock quietly.
